Your headshot is your digital handshake — it does the introductions on LinkedIn, casting sites and company pages before you’ve said a word. Mark Wheelwright has photographed headshots in Leeds for eighteen years: polished corporate headshots, expressive actor headshots and personal-brand portraits, all made at Unit 9 on the cobbles of Dock Street, ten minutes’ walk from the station.

Almost nobody walks in here relaxed — accountants, actors, CEOs, the first ten minutes are the same for everyone. Which is why every session starts on the sofa with a brew, not under the lights. We shoot tethered, so you watch the frames land and see yourself getting better at this — and somewhere around frame thirty, it stops feeling like having your photo taken.
“I was really nervous. Mark made me feel so comfortable and I ended up having such a good time. They turned out amazingly.”
Corporate teams get consistent, LinkedIn-ready images — photographed at the studio or at your offices, with every colleague matched. Actors get Spotlight-standard headshots with proper direction — there’s a dedicated actor headshots service. And founders and freelancers get a personal-brand set that covers the website, press and socials in one sitting. Sessions run from £95 across three tiers — all priced openly on the booking page.
“I was a little unsure as to what I needed and how this whole process worked, but Mark was very reassuring and extremely helpful.”

Book online — pick a session and a time; it takes about a minute. Turn up — we plan your looks over a brew, then shoot with direction the whole way through. Choose — your private gallery arrives fast, and retouched picks land within 48 working hours.
“I was really nervous taking my headshots considering it was my first time in a while but Mark was really patient and accommodating. The shots came out amazing as well!”
“First time ever having headshots done and Mark really put me at ease. Great guy and great photographer.”
Sessions run seven days a week at Unit 9, Dock Street — secure parking, ten minutes from Leeds station. Book online or call 0113 4400102 — the kettle’s on.
“I booked a shoot with Mark for my agency and Spotlight headshots and I am so impressed by how the pictures turned out. There were so many great shots it was really difficult to narrow them down.”

Are you looking for a headshot photographer in Leeds who actually shows you what you’re getting before you book? Dock Street Studio has run 900+ shoots and delivered 300+ five-star reviews from actors, executives and creatives who needed a headshot that opened doors — not just a nice photo. Whether you need polished corporate headshots, expressive actor headshots for Spotlight, or a refreshed LinkedIn image, the same photographer runs your session start to finish: Mark Wheelwright, who’s been shooting headshots in Leeds for 18 years. No handing you off to a junior on the day.
Hiring a professional headshot photographer is a career move, not a vanity purchase — your headshot is the first thing a casting director, recruiter or client sees, often before they’ve seen anything else about you. We shoot for corporate professionals, actors, entrepreneurs, coaches and creatives, and we do it two ways: clean studio shots on a plain background, and contextual shots that use your actual work environment when that’s the better fit.
Every session includes high-resolution digital files sized correctly for the platform they’re going to — LinkedIn, Spotlight, casting sites, company websites — because a file that’s the wrong crop or the wrong compression is a problem you shouldn’t have to solve yourself.
This is the part most headshot pages skip, and it’s the part that actually matters. Here’s the rhythm of a real session at Dock Street:
Before a single frame is shot, we talk through how the images will be used, what looks you need, and any specific brief — a casting call, a company rebrand, a LinkedIn refresh.
We start with the warm, approachable lead shot — soft key light, neutral background — while you settle into the room.
We move through your different looks, shifting the light from soft and even to more directional, and the background from white through to charcoal, so each image is genuinely distinct rather than a near-repeat.
Every frame lands on screen within a second of being shot via Capture One tethering, so you see exactly what’s working — angle, expression, jaw, eyes — and we adjust in real time. You’re not waiting until the gallery arrives to find out if you got the shot.
We shoot on a Nikon Z8 with Nikkor Z 85mm and 70–200mm f/2.8 lenses, lit with Swiss-made Elinchrom ELC Pro 1000s. Colour is calibrated using Calibrite and BenQ monitors, so what you see on the tethered screen is close to what you’ll get.

Eighteen years and 900+ projects in, the thing that separates a good headshot from a forgettable one isn't the camera — it's the direction. Specialised lighting and expression coaching capture a version of you that a phone filter can't fake.
The tethered process means every frame lands on screen as it's shot — you leave knowing you got the shot, rather than hoping.
We clean up temporary things — a spot, a stray hair, a bit of redness — and leave everything that's actually you. If a casting director can't recognise you from your own headshot, the photo has failed at its one job.
Plenty of the actors and professionals we shoot aren't Leeds-based. The trip is more straightforward than people expect:
Tell us where you're travelling from when you book and we'll line up a slot that fits the trains. Up against a casting deadline? A single rush edit can usually be turned around inside 24 hours.

Stick to solid colours — jewel tones, earth tones, navy, charcoal, soft white. Avoid logos, slogans and busy patterns, which flicker or moiré on camera. Crew necks read modern and youthful; a collared shirt ages you up a few years for professional or period-type roles. Bring 5–7 tops if you can — layering gives us several looks from one outfit change. More detail in what to wear for headshots.
Yes. Sleep properly in the week before, ease off alcohol, avoid new skincare or facials in the days before (they leave redness), and get any haircut done at least a few days ahead — never the day before. Arrive with hair and make-up done if that's your usual look for auditions or work.
Of course. Our professional editor offers subtle retouching to even out skin tone, brighten the eyes, and remove temporary blemishes or stray hairs, while avoiding heavy airbrushing that looks unnatural. Rule of thumb, we clean up temporary things — a spot, a stray hair, uneven tone — and leave the rest. No skin smoothing, no eye enlargement, no jaw slimming. The goal is a photo a casting director or colleague would still recognise you from in the room.
A pre-shoot consultation, guided shooting time with direction on posture and expression, tethered review as you go, and a private online gallery to choose from. Chosen images are retouched and delivered as high-resolution files, plus platform-specific versions (Spotlight spec, square crops for Instagram and agency sites) where needed.
The cost of a headshot at Dock Street Studio ranges between £95 and £200 depending on session time, image output, locations and sets. Head to the bookings page for more information, or drop me a line to discuss.
The Quick-Fire package includes 5 retouched headshots, the In-Depth session includes 10. Edited images are typically delivered within 48 working hours after final selection via the online web gallery (supplied same day) if you've got a casting deadline, tell us when you book and we can usually turn a single rush edit around inside 24 hours.
Yes, both. Actor and performer headshots use clean, controlled lighting and casting-appropriate retouching for Spotlight and casting platforms. Corporate and personal-branding headshots are tailored for LinkedIn, company websites and marketing materials. If you're not sure which "bucket" you're shooting for, see understanding your casting type.

If you want workspace and team-in-action shots in the same visit, see our commercial photography page.
