At Dock Street Studio, photography has always been about more than just snapping a photo then, ‘next!’. The studio, filled with creatives, is rooted in storytelling, capturing real moments, real people, and real impact. One of the most meaningful ways this ethos comes to life is through the studio’s collaboration with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) schools, helping to raise awareness of the incredible work these schools do every single day.
SEND schools play a necessary role in our education system. They support children and young people with a wide range of additional needs, offering adapted learning environments where pupils can grow, develop, and thrive at their own pace (very heavily child-centred). Yet, despite their importance, the work of SEND schools is often overlooked. Dock Street Studio’s collaboration aims to change that by using visual storytelling to highlight not only the educational side of SEND schools, but also the life-changing experiences they provide beyond the classroom.
Education in SEND schools goes beyond traditional learning. Lessons are carefully tailored and adapted to suit individual needs, focusing on communication, independence, emotional development, and life skills alongside academic progress. They value life skills and learning things that help us as human beings on a general day-to-day basis. Teachers and support staff work on this foundation to create a safe, supportive environment where every child feels valued and understood. Through photography, Dock Street helps display these moments, helping to capture the dedication of staff, the focus in a classroom, and the small but powerful achievements that mean a lot more than you know, to pupils and their families.
Equally important are the activities SEND schools provide. Day trips, outdoor learning, creative workshops, and hands-on experiences are not just “extras”, they are indispensable. For many SEND pupils, activities such as visiting a farm, exploring nature, taking part in sports, or simply experiencing a new environment can be beneficially progressive. These experiences help build confidence, social skills, and independence while giving children the opportunity to engage with the world in ways that suit their needs.
Dock Street Studio’s work highlights how impactful these activities truly are. A photograph of a child smiling on a day out, concentrating during a hands-on task, or proudly taking part in a group activity tells a story that words often cannot. These images help parents, communities, and organisations better understand why activities are so important for SEND pupils and why continued support and funding are essential.
This visibility matters. When people see the real impact of SEND education- how adjusted learning and meaningful activities can change lives for the better, encourages empathy, understanding, and action, It can inspire community involvement, support from local businesses, and greater recognition of the vital role SEND schools play. I type this with hands-on experience as a person who also works in SEND schools as a TA, community matters. It is a journey that is both rewarding, but can also be complex in so many ways.
For Mark and Dock Street, this collaboration is about using creative skills for positive change. It is simply using art as a great tool to promote a great cause. Photography becomes a tool for advocacy, helping SEND schools share their stories with authenticity and dignity. It ensures that the hard work of teachers, support staff, and pupils does not go unseen, and that the importance of inclusive education is brought into sharper focus.
