What does a commercial photographer in Leeds actually do?

Dock Street Studio is a commercial photography studio in central Leeds, run by photographer Mark Wheelwright. Commercial work here comes down to three things — product, people and place. Packshots and e-commerce imagery, corporate headshots and team portraits, and workspace and brand photography shot either in the studio at Unit 9, Dock Street or on location at your own premises. Half-day shoots are £450 and full days £750, with editing quoted separately at £350 for a full day's material. Usage rights are agreed in writing before we start. Clients include Paystrax, Arctic Hayes, Clear Channel, Habitat, Kirkstall Brewery, Channel 4, AAB, Sagars, Rubies Masquerade, Boutique Whitening, Leeds Living and Pivot Academy, alongside event and press work for Leeds Festival, Leeds Digital Festival, Leeds United and the First Direct Arena. Mark has 18+ years behind the lens, 900+ projects delivered and a 5.0-star rating on Google. Every shoot is planned before a frame is taken — the brief, the shot list, and where each image is actually going to be used — because the test of commercial photography is how much of it is still doing a job a year later.

Commercial Photography in Leeds: Product, People and Place

Strong commercial photography answers a question before anyone has to ask it. Mark Wheelwright has spent 18+ years photographing brands across Leeds and West Yorkshire, and every project starts the same way: where is this image actually going to be used? A LinkedIn headshot, a press photograph and a product page image each need something different from light, composition and framing. Three recent projects show the range. For Paystrax, a Leeds fintech whose entire proposition is the human touch, we photographed the team in their own offices — ten to fifteen minutes per person, a key light at 45 degrees and a kicker for depth, delivered within 48 to 72 hours and cropped for both LinkedIn and web. For Arctic Hayes, who have been freezing the nation's pipes since 1966, we shot the launch of the Smart Freeze Clamp here in the studio: packshots of every kit variant, in-situ lifestyle frames on copper pipework, packaging and brochure imagery, all tethered into Capture One so their team could approve shots on the day rather than waiting on an edit. For Channel 4, headshots for assistant producers and scriptwriters at their headquarters. The studio covers product and promotional photography, corporate headshots and team portraits, editorial and press work, and workspace photography that shows a business in its own space. Every shoot is planned in advance — the brief, the shot list, and where each image will live — so what comes back is consistent, on-brand and ready to publish.

Mark Wheelwright is the lead photographer and studio manager at Dock Street Studio, based on Dock Street in central Leeds. He has 18 years’ experience in commercial, editorial, and headshot photography. The studio holds a 5.0-star rating on Google from 98 reviews and has completed 900+ projects.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a commercial photographer in Leeds cost?

A half-day commercial shoot is £450 and a full day is £750. Editing is quoted separately at £350 for a full day's material, covering selection, colour and retouching to a publishable standard — so a full day shot and edited comes to £1,100. Large product runs, multi-location days and extended usage are quoted individually. Every quote is confirmed in writing before anything is booked, so the figure you are given is the figure you pay.

Who owns the photographs, and what can I use them for?

You receive a licence to use the images for the purposes we agree — website, social, print, advertising, or all of them. Copyright remains with the studio, which is the standard position in UK law, and a full transfer can be arranged separately if your business needs one. Term, territory and exclusivity are written into the quote, so there is nothing ambiguous to argue about a year later.

How quickly will I get the images?

Corporate headshots and team days are usually delivered within 48 to 72 hours, organised by person and cropped for both LinkedIn and standard web use. Product and catalogue work takes 5 to 10 working days depending on volume, with a 48-hour rush option available for an additional fee. Everything arrives through a private gallery link, and RAW files stay on archive for 12 months.

Do you shoot at your studio or at our offices?

Both. The studio at Unit 9, Dock Street handles product, packshots and headshots under controlled lighting, with a 2.7m floor-to-ceiling white backdrop. For team portraits and workspace photography we usually come to you — the Paystrax shoot was made in their own offices, which meant the lifestyle frames carried genuine context rather than a generic backdrop. There is onsite parking either way.
